which carries fare-paying passengers along with the mail in rural areas
where there is no other form of public transport. The service brings
a new dimension to travel in the more remote areas and is ideal for
walkers. Information is available by calling 08457 740 740, or online

City Tours
City tours provide a great introduction to Scotland's cities. A variety
of tours operate in each city - often on open-top and vintage buses.
Some tours are available in a variety of languages. Tickets are generally
valid all day and can be used to hop on and off the buses at designated
stops throughout the tour route. Tour tickets may also provide discounts
to visitor attractions.
Day and Extended Tours
There is a huge range of day and extended tours offered throughout Scotland.
Most tours depart from the cities but some also operate from rural areas.
The duration of tours vary depending on the distances and themes involved.
For more details, visit www.visitscotland.com.
Getting Here by Road
Scotland has an excellent road network with motorways and dual carriageway roads linking cities and most towns. The primary road network extends over most of the country, except in a few remote areas. In these areas you will find single-track roads with passing places where you have to draw in to the left to let others pass or overtake. Getting away from traffic jams and out onto Scotland's quiet roads can really put the fun back into driving. There are no tolls on roads in Scotland, but tolls must be paid on the Forth and Tay Bridges.
CAR RENTAL
There are many companies offering competitive car rental rates. Details
of many of the major car rental firms in Scotland are given in the Car
Hire section of this web site. Conditions of hire vary but most require
the driver to be between 23 and 75 years old, with a current driving
licence having been held for at least one year.
The rental charge is due when you collect the vehicle and usually covers passenger liability, third party, fire and theft insurance. You will also be required to leave a deposit which will be refunded if you return the vehicle without damage. Be sure to check if you are required to fill the tank full or to the same level as when you hired the car, otherwise you will have to pay a re-fuelling fee. For details of branch locations and rental conditions please either view the company's web site or contact them directly.
FUEL
Many fuel stations in cities are open 24 hours a day. In rural areas
the distance between stations is greater and opening hours may be shorter.
Fuel prices fluctuate and tend to be lower in cities and towns.
Getting to Scotland by Rail
There is a fast, efficient, cross border railway service from England and Wales
to Scotland. The journey from London takes around 4 hours 30 minutes
to Edinburgh and 5 hours to Glasgow, with regular services throughout
the day. There are also direct services from London King's Cross to
Aberdeen and Inverness, and good links from other English cities such
as Birmingham and Manchester.
